Trail Information
Full Review: When a Greek freighter crashed onto the Palos Verdes
coast in 1961, no one could have guessed that its remains would be left to
rot and rust on the beach for decades to come. But the shipwreck - what's
left of it anyway - still sits on the rocks below Palos Verdes Point, where
pelicans have made a permanent perch of its larger parts. It's worth the
tough walk over ankle-twisting rocks to take a peek.
Catch the trail down to Flat Rock on the lowest end of the grassy patch next
to where you parked. It descends steeply to a popular longboard beach. Walk
south (past the surfers), where you'll round the first bend onto the second
of many secluded coves. Stop and check out tidepools on your way - be sure
to plan this hike during low tide.
After a while you'll start to see rusted chunks of metal washed up on the
beach. These are the first pieces of the washed-up freighter. Keep going
until you see the main part of the ship at Palos Verdes Point. Then turn
around and retrace your steps as the tide comes up.
