 Trail Information

Full Review: Postcard-perfect views of the Malibu coast - that's one reason to take this hike. But if you plan your visit to coincide with low tide, you'll find an even better one. At the end of the trail, receding water gives way to tidepools teeming with sea life: starfish, anemones, sand crabs, mussels... and surprisingly few humans.

The trail begins at the end of the parking lot, up the side of Point Dume. Off to the right, you'll see rock climbers inching their way up the face. As you start uphill, remember to turn around every once in a while to look out over the water. Depending on the time of year, you'll see seals, dolphins, and sometimes whales as they make their way along the coast.

At the first two junctions, turn right to wrap around an iceplant bed on your way out to the point's ledge. When you reach the chain-link overlook, you'll have to slip between two wires on the left. The trail continues on the other side.

The next overlook is a wooden deck — this is a prime whale watching spot. From here, the trail leads to a final junction. Turn right and follow the metal guide rails to a set of steps that lead down to the secluded beach. When you've had your fill of tidepools — or when the water level starts to rise — go back the way you came.
