 Trail Information

Full Review: How often do you get to see frozen yucca quills poking up through a fresh blanket of snow? That sight alone is worth the drive to this far corner of the county. But if you need another reason to bundle up for a chilly winter walk, picture this: tall San Antonio Falls cascading off a snow-covered cliff.

Follow San Antonio Falls Rd. from the parking area past the locked gate. (Only residents are permitted to drive beyond this point.) You'll walk past several cabins in the next half-mile. The road ends at an overlook above the base of the falls. If there isn't snow or ice on the ground, you may be able to scramble down the rest of the way. But most of the time the footing is too precarious.

From the overlook, a fire road curves to the right and starts to climb. Soon you'll be able to spot Mt. Baldy Rd. from above. Keep walking uphill as the path takes you to a point just above the base of the Mt. Baldy ski area, where you can watch skiers making their way to the lifts. The path continues to Mt. Baldy Notch, where trails split off in several directions (including the Devil's Backbone Trail to San Antonio Peak). But the ski overlook is as good a turnaround point as any. Go back the way you came.
