The District Lounge is a step back in time, from
its vintage Old Town Orange location when it was
the post office, circa 1920's, to the imposing
chandeliers and wall coverings of embossed red
velvet and red brick. Cushy black booths face
across to a sprawling bar and pool tables await
players in the rear. This place has long been
established as the definitive neighborhood bar
,offering the town's most popular nightly
entertainment. Then, recently, general manager
Erick Ellstrom took the reigns and, in concert
with chef Juan Garcia he has expanded the
concept. Thus, they are currently attracting
customers with a casual menu, specifically
promoting a build-ur-own burger idea which is
proving is much an entertainment as a source of
nourishment.
For $7, guests check their preferences on a
paper list: burger, bread and cooking directions
with choices so diverse it's challenging. Beef,
chicken, turkey or veggie cooked to taste with
traditional bun, sourdough or chiabatta, the
latter my overwhelming recommendation. Or forget
the bread and go healthy with a burger in a
bowl, all complimentary toppings and a salad ($2
extra) rather than the delicious crusty tater
tots, fries or $1 additional onion rings. Choose
four complimentary embellishments from over two
dozen, 50c each for extras: like jalapenos, grilled
pineapple, or 75c
for each premium toppings:
avocado, apple smoked bacon, sautéed mushroom, fried
egg, etc. Diverse sauces included are
ginger teriyaki, wasabi mayo, and sour
cream. And, for 75c each, top the whole
creation with bleu cheese, sharp provolone,
smoked mozzarella, swiss, jalapeno jack or, (would you
believe), Velveeta.
Tacos, equally budget friendly, are $1 on
Tuesdays. And do not overlook The District's
surprisingly tender seared ahi, a delectable
appetizer that's also served as a sandwich or
burger for $9 each.
