This cozy little Japanese gem, the prideful
creation of enthusiastic young couple, Deborah Sado, who hails from Australia, and husband
Mooky, a native of Tokyo, is unique in many
ways. Positioned far back from the lights of
Coast Highway, the interior boasts an extensive
sushi bar where a trio of authentic Japanese
chefs prevail, several comfortable tables and
perimeter outside seating. And for dining in
traditional Far East fashion, one authentic
Japanese table awaits for guests who must remove
shoes prior to settling in. It is the first such
Asian amenity I’ve noted in the OC for many
decades. Featuring an unusually extensive menu
for so small a place, chef Mooky’s repertoire is
truly and deliciously innovative.
Sharing dinner on pillows with our esteemed
editor on a busy Tuesday, Quinn and I sipped
refreshingly cold, unfiltered sake, while being
charmed by our gracious hosts who revealed that
their busy 7-year domain will soon be
considerably expanded via acquisition of an
adjoining business. An avid sushi aficionado,
Quinn immediately proclaimed the atmosphere of
this happy hideaway “warm, friendly and
fun”, saying “my favorite part is the amazing
food”, then noting such off-the-menu favorites
as the Flaming Fireball “a must try” and low-carb
Summer Roll an appetizer she looks forward to
coming back for frequently. My taste buds found
the latter especially captivating. the sensuous
wrap of delicate rice paper embracing delectably
tender morsels of crab/avocado/salmon/whitefish/cucumber/mint
and sprouts
tastily complemented with wasabi dipping sauce.
Similarly, I discovered Mooky’s soft shell crab
to be on a par with New England‘s best, the
tender crustacean perfectly crisp yet moistly
tender with tangy ponzu sauce enhancement. 930
Sushi’s unusual sake offerings are also
noteworthy. Dessert was another shared surprise,
the generous serving of luscious chocolate crème
brulee delectably contrasted with fresh seasonal
berries. Agreeably, the cuisine at 930 Sushi
definitely reigns supreme.
